Diary of a Wombat
Written by Jackie French
Illustrations by Bruce Whatley
Diary of a Wombat is the oersonal diary of Mothball the wombat with attitude. She is addicted to sleep and carrots and is not afraid to go after either. The book is based on the real life Mothball (read about her and why Jackie French wrote the book here: http://www.jackiefrench.com/wombat.html).
The illustrations add an extra dimension to this epistory tale, as the reader is treated to extra visions of Mothball's antics as she trains her Humans to be "better pets". The book is written in the first person (as it is Mothball's diary) and uses a comedic theme as the plot.
This book could be used in the classroom as a quirky and fun introduction to Australian native animals. It could also be used as a basis for a writing activity as you could get the students to write a continuation of the diary or a diary for a different animal.
