Where the Wild Things Are is about a young boy called Max getting sent to his room without dinner. When in his room his imagination decides to take over and a mysterious, wild forest and sea grows out of his imagination, and Max sails to the land of the Wild Things. He ends up being the fiercest of all the wild things and they make him "the king of all wild things". The story ends with Max returning home from the land of the wild things to his bedroom where he finds his supper waiting for him, still hot.

This book could be used in a classroom to show students a more effective to deal with anger rather than hurting another student. At the beginning of the story Max is in conflict with his mother and his own anger. When he is sent to his room he doesn’t keep misbehaving, instead he gives free rein to his angry emotions through his fantasy. Having a lesson based on different ways to deal with anger with students would be beneficial as it will give them other ways to release their anger.

OK, but here is also a lot you could teach about narrative and how Sendak uses illustrations to carry sue of the narrative. What kind of 'wild things' are they - scary? Funny? How do you know? What does this tell us about Max?
Also the language is interesting - repetition and so on. So don't forget that there is a lot to think about in terms of English before you think about how the book might be used to introduce a theme such as anger.
