The Greedy Triangle
By Marilyn Burns
The Greedy Triangle is a book about maths, it introduces the concept of shape and through a narrative explores them in a real world and imaginative contexts. The narrator draws the reader into Triangle's life and journey as he changes shape until he realises that he was happiest as himself.
The illustrations support the story, but also show the way each shape can occur in the real world (i.e. when he is a trangle he is shown to be such things as a roof on a house, a face of a pyramid and a slice of pie). There are also explanations of the concept of shapes and ideas to extend learning in the back of the book.
This book would be good to use in a mathematics lesson to introduce the concept of shapes. It is a fun way to get children thinking about shapes and where they see them in an everyday context.
