Boy Overboard
Boy Overboard is a novel by Morris
Gleitzman. The novel is about Jamal and Bibi who are from Afghanistan. Their
governments are very controlling so their family decides its best to travel to
Australia where there governments will no longer be able to bully them. But the
journey isn’t a pleasant one as there are many obstacles they have to face
along the way.
This novel is ideal to use in a classroom
as it is very rich and thought provoking. It also has numerous themes that the
students can explore and identify.
Some of these themes include:
-Conflict
-Differences in cultures
-Survival
-Family bonding
-Those who hold all the power (government)
and those who are powerless
This novel presents a perfect opportunity
for students to be able to do a character analysis looking at the actions and
the words of the characters but also going deeper into why they think the
character did what they did and the choices they think they would have had.
Students can also look at the structure of the novel and explore aspects of the
writing style. Students could also take the place of one of the main characters
and write a journal about the travels of the journey.
