The Hunger Games
By Suzanne Collins
The Hunger games storyline involves the Capitol hosting a
yearly event called the Hunger Games where two “tributes” are selected from
each of the twelve districts to fight to the death (only one person can win) in
a created arena, as a reminder to the
districts not to rebel (and to entertain the masses in the Capitol). The protagonist
in the narrative is Katniss Everdeen who volunteers to save her younger sister
from the games and follows her throughout the book. This is the first book in a
trilogy.
There are many themes running through this book, such as:
- · Power and political relationships
- · Society and class
- · Poverty
- · Strengths and skills
- · And sacrifice
Suzanne Collins weaves these themes and others through the
book, which is written in the first person using present tense. We experience
the trials and tribulations of the book as Katniss experiences it giving us
insight into her and how she experiences and feel about the events and
competing in the games.
In a classroom you could use this novel to introduce many of
the themes listed above in an upper primary setting. The book is quite long and
younger readers may have trouble with some of the words and concepts contained
within.
