Where My Mind Goes During Science Class
Written by Barbara Esham
Illustrated by Mika and Carl Gordon
The story is about Emily and her musings during science class. No matter how hard she tries (because she actually does like science) she cannot stop her mind from wandering and her imagination taking over. Her teacher Mrs Freedman sees this occurring and gives Emily a journal to write in, so she can see what is going on in Emily's head. The journal turns out to be a science class success and the teacher implements it with the rest of the class.
I found that this children's book was unusual because it was actually written in the first person (Emily) and gives insight into her thoughts, feelings and successes. It still contains elements of a quest because Emily is on a journey to stop her imaginings during science class. The illustrations give life to Emily's imaginings and also a view as to how her classroom is set up for learning.
In a classroom you could use this book to introduce the concept of science journals and how to use them.
