Wombat Stew

Wombat Stew

Marcia K Vaughan

Wombat Stew is a picture book about a very clever dingo and how he is prevented in his attempts to make a wombat stew, when the other bush animals successfully band together to trick him. Dingo had captured the wombat but luckily for him the other animals were great friends of his and offer Dingo suggestions as to what he should put in his stew. Dingo follows their advice, adding all sorts of not so appetizing ingredients. In the end, Dingo's wombat stew turns out to be not nearly as delicious as he had hoped.

The text is relatively short and simple, and written with rhythm. The wombat doesn't have a huge role in this story, though the pictures of wombat and his expressions are particularly entertaining, especially the dancing wombat at the end.

Throughout the story it is quite noticeable how Vaughan has used lots of words ending in Y to describe the ingredients and other things. This could be turned into a lesson by having the students see if they can come up with different adjectives that end in Y to describe some of the ingredients suggested by the other animals.
