Holes

Holes is a novel written by Louis Sachar.
This story is about a boy called Stanley Yelnats who is sent to Camp Green
Lake, a juvenile detention camp, for a crime that he did not commit. When he
arrives at the camp it isn’t what Stanley thought it would be like at all, it
is hot and there are limited water supplies. Stanley and the other boys are
forced to dig holes each day. It is Stanley who eventually comes to realise that
they are digging holes because the Warden is searching for something in
particular.
There are many themes listed throughout the
novel and this is an area an educator can get their students to explore after
them having read the novel. Some of the themes include:
-The importance of friendship (between Stanley
and Zero)
-The importance of history and its place in
everyday life
- Cruelty
This novel is great for upper primary as it
is easy to read, it is very captivating and hooks you right from the beginning.
There are also many activities and questions that could be made in relation to
the novel.
