Week 7 Comment

This week’s discussion was about the two activities we were to do for our workshop preparation. As a group we discussed them, but it seemed to highlight the confusion (at least for me) over what is involved in the four text practices (I found the following website that gave me definitions and examples of the text practices - http://www.curriculumsupport.education.nsw.gov.au/middleyears/teachers/ideas/ ).

Activity 2:

The newspaper articles we discussed for this activity were about the funding that the Government has announced for all schools. It was amazing to contrast the two articles because it showed the way each news service positioned themselves in opinion. After the class discussed these it was clear that we were in fact participating in the text practices without actually realising we were doing them.

Activity 5:

The last activity was about cereal boxes. We discussed the two boxes and how they differed in colour, graphics and textual information, this was to appeal to different audiences (e.g. Rice Bubbles is designed to appeal to children and Just Right is set to appeal to adults and people who want to eat healthy).

Kelly, I also thought it was interesting to see the differences between the newspaper articles. I was surprised to see how the same story was manipulated in order to place more emphasis on certain parts of the article. When looking at the articles i also did not realise that I was involved in the text practices and it was great to then have a class discussion to clarify the ways we were participating in them. The cereal boxes I thought were easier to distinguish in terms of target audience, layout, font use and colour. As Kelly mentioned the way Rice Bubbles and Coco Pops are designed to appeal to children and how Just Right is set to appeal to those who want a healthy eating lifestyle.
